The Beatles have released a new curated collection entitled Study Songs Vol. 1. The EP features six instrumental mixes from the archive and, as its title suggests, it’s focused on the more laid-back end of the band’s catalogue.

The tracks featured on Study Songs Vol. 1 are Because, Penny Lane, Within, Without You, She’s Leaving Home, Something and Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight. The mixes from Abbey Road were previously released as part of the 2019 Super Deluxe Edition of the legendary album, with Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight featuring just strings and brass, and Something consisting only of George Martin’s moving string arrangement.

Within Without You showcases Harrison’s sitar work, and this pared-down mix puts the varied instrumentation up front, and is perhaps the most relaxing and hypnotic mix on the whole EP. You can take a listen to it below, or stream the entire EP on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming services.

The ‘Vol. 1’ in the title also hints at more to come.

In related low-energy Beatles news, last week saw the release of Billie Eilish’s mesmerising version of Something, which pares the arrangement down to just piano and voice.
