Phil X of Bon Jovi has officially entered the ranks of Gibson as a brand ambassador, joining the likes of Slash, and most recently, Alice In Chain’s Jerry Cantrell.

While there hasn’t been any official news of a signature model, Phil recently posted a picture of him holding a heavily modified Gibson Custom Shop 1964 SG on Instagram. View the post below.

“[The Gibson SG] didn’t catch my eye. It punched it. That finish looks like a delicious apple. The neck is fatter than usual too. I played it with [Bon Jovi] in South America last September, but as I’m getting ready to really dig into [Gibson] as well as do a [Phil X & The Drills] tour in March, I had to personalise it,” Phil said in an interview with Gibson.

Phil also went into detail regarding the SG’s various modifications. “I put an Arcane PX100 (a P-90 style pickup in a humbucker housing) in the bridge position, pulled the neck pickup out (and replaced it with a DC action figure) and just ran one volume and one tone,” he said. Phil also described the guitar as a prelude to “sitting down with the luthier at Gibson and throwing around ideas for a signature”.

Born Theofilos Xenidis, Phil X became an official member of Bon Jovi in 2016, replacing long-time guitarist Richie Sambora. Bon Jovi recently announced dates for their 2020 North American tour, kicking off on 10 June in Washington and wrapping up on 28 July in New York.
