Swedish company SoundBrut has given its DRVA overdrive/boost pedal a welcome update, dropping in more tone-shaping features. The versatile DRVA MKII packs in two individual effects that can be activated in series: a MOSFET boost with a custom tone stack, followed by a hard-clipping overdrive section.

The ‘VA’ portion provides up to 25dB of colored boost—choose one of six preset tones, each of which has two fixed EQ settings, and then dial in the amount of boost you require. “If the boost is kept at unity, the pedal adds subtle character and push,” SoundBrut said. “Turn the boost all the way up [and] it adds weight and loudness.”

Things get woolier with the ‘DR’ section. The NE5534-powered overdrive is rich, saturated and, if you tweak the passive “Treble-cut” knob, can get pretty crunchy, too. Engage both the boost and OD together, and you can go from hairy, harmonic-rich overdrive to full-on fuzz.
