Listen: Stephen Malkmus’ folky new song Xian Man

The song is taken from his forthcoming album, Traditional Techniques.

Stephen Malkmus has released the lead single from his forthcoming folk-inspired album Traditional Techniques. Listen to Xian Man above.

Traditional Techniques is Malkmus’ third solo studio effort, following 2019’s electronically-driven Groove Denied. The new album, in contrast to 2019’s release, largely features acoustic instruments like a 12-string guitar and a flute. Traditional Techniques was recorded with The Decemberists’ Chris Funk and Skunk’s Matt Sweeney, the latter of whom plays guitar on the album.

Malkmus has announced North American tour dates in support of Traditional Techniques, and will be joined on stage by Funk, Sweeney, Brad Truax and Jake Morris. Qais Essar and Eric Zang will also perform with the band on certain as-yet-unconfirmed dates. The tour will kick off in Minnesota on 31 March and conclude in Michigan on 19 April.

Traditional Techniques is out 6 March on Matador.
