Fern Guitars has shared an update on the Phoenix, a modular electric guitar that lets players swap out pickup modules on the fly.
We first reported on the Phoenix back in May 2020, when an early prototype of the guitar was shown off in images and in a short demo video. This latest Kickstarter update of the instrument – dubbed a “final prototype” – showed a much more polished guitar. It will be available to pre-order on 15 June.
The guitar promises that modules – fitted with pickups and their respective controls – will be able to be swapped out “in seconds”. Some modules resemble Tele-style configurations, while others feature two humbuckers.
Fern Guitars is a one-man operation. The brand is aiming to sell at least 20 units of the Phoenix, which is “the minimum we’d need in order to tool up for production and get the guitars out within roughly six months”, according to a Kickstarter description.
The Kickstarter page obscures how much has been pledged so far to the project.
As far as pricing goes, the Phoenix (with one module) will be available to the first 10 backers for $999. Similarly, the first 10 backers can get their hands on modules through Kickstarter for $425 apiece. Beyond that, the guitar will be priced at $1,200 and modules will cost $445 each.
