Silver Sky dethroned: for the first time since its launch, John Mayer’s signature PRS wasn’t the best selling guitar of the year

After two years at the top of Reverb’s best selling electric guitar list, the SE Silver Sky is relegated to number 3 for 2024.

Reverb’s best-selling guitars of the year round up has been released, and for the first time since its launch, the PRS SE Silver Sky did not make the top spot.

Reverb releases its best selling gear items at the end of each year, which is calculated by total order count (meaning by the actual number of items sold, not by the total price). Since its 2022 release, the SE Silver Sky has continually come in first place, but has now officially been dethroned.

Taking the top spot for its best selling electric model of 2024 is the Fender Player Telecaster. Interestingly, this model also topped Reverb’s best seller list in 2021. During this year, the original 2018 PRS Silver Sky that was launched by John Mayer came in third place.

For 2024, the Fender American Professional II Stratocaster lands second, with the SE Silver Sky coming third. Reverb does note that its first and second place guitars were both widely available for discounts this year compared to their previous retail price tags, so that may have been a contributing factor.

The SE Silver Sky did however make the top spot for its best selling used electric guitars list, and for guitars that were released this year, the PRS SE CE 24 Standard Satin takes first place, with the Fender Tom DeLonge Starcaster in second, and the Epiphone Dave Grohl Signature DG-335 in third. Funnily enough, the highly sought-after Hello Kitty Squier Stratocaster came fifth, after only releasing in November.

For acoustic models, Reverb’s biggest seller overall was the Fender Acoustasonic Player Telecaster, with the Ibanez TOD10N Tim Henson in second, and the Tanglewood TSBB-O Blackbird Orchestra coming third.
