The alt-rock trio began work on Sweep It Into Space in the autumn of 2019 with plans to have the album out in mid-2020 – but that was before COVID-19 threw a wrench in the works.
Kurt Vile co-produced the album and performed 12-string guitar on its lead single, I Ran Away, which you can listen below. But when lockdowns last year made a deeper collaboration too tricky to pull off, frontman J Mascis said he “ended up just mimicking a few things [Vile had] done.”
“I was listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy, so I was trying to get some of that duelling twin lead sound,” Mascis said in a press release. “The recording session was pretty well finished by the time things really hit the fan. So I just ended up doing more things by myself.”
Mascis also laid down a Mellotron track on the song Take It Back himself. “Originally I’d thought I’d have Ken Mauri (who has done keyboard work for Dino in the past) come in and play piano,” he noted. “But when the lockdown happened in March, that meant I was on my own. But it was cool.”
