John Frusciante has supplied a fresh taste of his upcoming album, Maya, releasing the single Brand E alongside an accompanying music video shot in Los Angeles.

The music video was directed by Amalia Irons and stars Frusciante, Lee Bootee, as well as a cat named Tanya – who portrayed Maya, Frusciante’s late cat and the album’s namesake. Take a look and listen to Brand E above.

With Maya, Frusciante shed his usual artist moniker, Trickfinger, in lieu of his real name; the album, named after his late pet, held particular personal significance to him.

“Maya was with me as I made music for 15 years, so I wanted to name it after her,” Frusciante said in a statement. “She loved music, and with such a personal title, it didn’t seem right to call myself Trickfinger, somehow, so it’s by John Frusciante.”

Maya is due to be released 23 October through Timesig. Ahead of its launch, the tracks Amethblowl and Usbrup Pensul were also released.

Like his preceding record, She Smiles Because She Presses The Button, Maya collects mostly instrumental tracks from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist, who took inspiration from breakbeat and jungle music.

“I don’t have that interest in singing or writing lyrics like I used to,” Frusciante said of the album’s musicality. “The natural thing when I’m by myself now, is to just make music like the stuff being released this year. I really love the back and forth with machines and the computer.”
