Boss has been renowned for making affordable, industry-standard stompboxes for decades now, but the last few years have seen the company make significant forays into the world of guitar amplification. Four years on from its first iteration, the digital Katana range has a fresh lick of paint, with updated effects and functionality.

The main advances are in tonal flexibility: there’s now a ‘variation’ option for each of the five amp types, effectively giving you 10 to choose from. The effects section has also been redesigned so you can use up to five at once instead of three. Imagine trying to cram 10 amps into the back of your car…

In our review of the Boss Katana-50 MkII, we said: “With the output set to 50 watts, a Telecaster on the clean setting floods the room with pure ‘valve amp’ tone. The two high-gain amp models are just as good, with ‘brown’ offering an irresistible shortcut to 80s hair metal. The software opens up loads more options with over 60 effects in total, ensuring you have every pedal imaginable at your fingertips, including discontinued Boss stompboxes.

“For bedroom jams, rehearsals and even full-blown gigging, the Katana-50 MkII covers all grounds with aplomb.”
