Fender has launched its new signature Mustang for Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, along with a new video exploring the guitar’s sounds and features.

The Ben Gibbard Mustang comes finished in natural, with a black pickguard and chrome hardware. It recreates the approach of Gibbard’s own heavily-modified ’70s Mustangs that he uses as touring workhorses, as well as adding a few new modern features. Its pickups are two custom-designed single-coils, voiced after those found in Gibbard’s own guitar. These are chosen via a three-way rotary switch, disguised as the guitar’s tone control.

The body is chambered ash for reduced weight, with a bolt-on maple neck. It’s notably fitted with what looks like a standard Mustang vibrato – but is actually a hardtail bridge. You can hear it in action above.

Gibbard explores these features himself in a new episode of Fender Tracks, the brand’s series of interviews which dives into the writing and recording of a particular song – in this case, Black Sun. Take a look below.

The guitar lists for $1,099.99 / £599 / €699. Find out more at fender.com.
