Today (21 September) at the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards, H.E.R. performed a cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U during the In Memoriam segment of the event. Take a look above.

This year’s In Memoriam segment honoured the likes of Trini Lopez, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne, and legendary film composer Ennio Morricone – among Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, Regis Philbin, Max von Sydow, Rip Taylor, Kirk Douglas and many others. See the full list here.

The tribute opened with Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel, paying tribute to United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Friday (18 September) from complications of metastatic cancer.

“On Friday, we lost a great American,” he said. “Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a compassionate and tireless champion of equality and justice who said her legacy was to make life a little better for people less fortunate than she. Sounds like pretty good words to live by, to me.”

Prince originally penned Nothing Compares 2 U for his side project, The Family, and the song was featured on their eponymous album. The song was later made famous by Sinéad O’Connor, who released the cover as the second single on 1990’s I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.

Earlier this April, H.E.R. launched Girls With Guitars, a weekly Instagram live series featuring performances and interviews with fellow female guitarists and musicians about music, the creative process and of course, guitars.
