At tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards, H.E.R. brought out her clear Fender Stratocaster to blitz out the solo to a brand-new song, Anti.

The rising R&B artist had commissioned the Fender Custom Shop to build the guitar – it was constructed by Master Builder Scott Buehl – for the 2019 Grammy Awards, where it made its onstage debut. And it took Buehl only a week to put together the acrylic six-string.

“Acrylic can be difficult and unforgiving, so I had to take the time and be methodical about my approach,” Buehl said in a Fender blog post. “It’s not my first time around the block with that material. It likes a lot of coolant and a slow feed rate when it’s being cut or drilled. If I rush things, it melts. It’s super precise, but I really like working with it, because I know how to keep it happy.”

Despite the show-stopping Strat, H.E.R. walked away empty-handed at the VMAs. She was nominated for Best New Artist, Push Artist Of The Year and Best R&B.

The other guitar-toting artist at the VMAs was none other than Taylor Swift. The pop star strapped on a baby pink Gibson Jumbo to perform – for the first time live – Lover, the title track of her recently released album. Watch her set here:
