John Mayer has shared a brief update on the progress of his hotly anticipated new LP, assuring fans that it will be arriving very soon.

Mayer teased the album’s arrival in an Instagram Story yesterday (13 May). “I know many of you have been waiting patiently for my next album,” he wrote. “I assure you it’ll all fire up very soon.

“I’ll put it like this: Every day you have to go without my new music is another day I can work harder to make sure it gets heard by as many people as might enjoy it.”

He added: “I hope you’ll think it’s worth the wait.”

Mayer had shared snippets from the forthcoming album on TikTok in March. Fans noted the two clips had a strong ’80s connection, particularly to the music of artists such as Phil Collins, Toto and Peter Gabriel.

“Feels like a song that would play in an 80s film. I mean that in the best way possible,” wrote one fan. Another wrote: “I’m sensing Phil Collins vibes from this album.”

The forthcoming release – still unnamed at this point – will be Mayer’s eighth studio album and the follow up to 2017’s The Search For Everything.

Since 2015, Mayer has been performing with Dead & Company, the jam band featuring former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.

Yesterday, the group announced they will be embarking on an extensive 2021 North American tour. It will kick off on 16 August in Raleigh, North Carolina and wind up with three nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on 29 to 31 October.
