Guitarist and singer Mdou Moctar has announced his new album Afrique Victime, and released a music video for new single Tala Tannam.

The album is set to arrive on 21 May via Matador, and is his first record on the label. It follows his 2019 record Ilana: The Creator, which gained him an international audience. Moctar hails from Agadez, a desert village in rural Niger – his style is a blend of traditional Tuareg melodies and western electric guitar playing, inspired by YouTube videos of Eddie Van Halen and more.

The video for Tala Tannam was filmed in Niamey, Niger last year when bassist Mikey Coltun made the journey to meet his bandmates and begin to prepare for Afrique Victime’s release. Moctar said of the track: “Tala Tannam means your tears. It is another love song of which I’m very fond.”

You can see the video below.

Moctar signed to Matador last year. The song released alongside his signing announcement – Chismiten – also appears as the first track of Afrique Victime.

You can preorder the album on digital, CD or vinyl here.
