Neil Young has announced that he plans to take Crazy Horse on a US tour this year, and has used the announcement to highlight that many of the arenas he and his bands used to play have been demolished.

While there are no dates for the tour, we do know that Young intends to stick to venues with a bit more heritage as his statement on the Neil Young Archives makes clear: “We have been looking at booking the Crazy Horse BARN tour. Many of the old places we used to play are gone now, replaced by new coliseums we have to book year in advance and we don’t want to go to anyway,” he writes.

Young continued, explaining his dislike for ultra-modern venues: “That’s not the way we like to play. It sounds way too much like a real job if you have to book it and wait a year, so we have decided to play the old arenas – not the new sports facilities put up by corporations for their sports teams. Largely soulless, these new buildings cost a fortune to play in. We wanted to play in a couple of months because we feel like it. To us it’s not a regular job. We don’t like the new rules.” The statement then provides an exhaustive list of the venues that are now demolished, and those that still stand.

The post concludes with the promise of more details to be announced: “If you are looking for us on our Crazy Horse Barn Tour, we will hopefully be in one of the existing arenas. Hope to see you there. News coming pretty soon!”

The announcement somewhat contradicts recent communication from Young, who had responded to a fan letter on the Neil Young Archives asking about tour plans for 2020 with: “Don’t expect anything. I am not focused on playing. I am taking care of my music.”
