The Golem overdrive will make the ground shudder

Deep Space Devices’ new stompbox is a germanium- and silicone-powered monster.

Deep Space Devices Golem

Move aside, Tube Screamer clones. There’s a new overdrive in town, and it doesn’t care about creating mild, transparent, bluesy tones. Golem, from Deep Space Devices, is capable of issuing out anything from speaker-ripping buzzsaw sounds to guttural, bassy textures that’ll make the ground quake.

At the heart of Golem sits both a silicone and germanium diode. Switch between them with the “Tremble” toggle switch, then amp it up with the “Quake” switch. A “Mass” switch lets you boost the bass frequencies, while four knobs control your regular parameters such as gain, volume, tone and upper-mid EQ. And for versatility’s sake, the “Evolve” switch lets you go from a tone-shaping drive to, in Deep Space Devices’ words, “sheer pandemonium.”

Oh, and did we mention the killer artwork on the pedal?
