The folks at ZVEX are the true mad scientists of the tone world, and the latest creation to roll out of their lab is the limited-edition Germanium Woolly Mammoth.

Many of you would already be familiar with the silicon-based variant—which is a beast in its own right—but this version kicks things up a notch with rare ‘spam can’ germanium transistors. With these transistors, you’ll be able to achieve a warm, vintage-y fuzz that works just as well for electric blues leads as biting punk riffs.

Additionally, the brand claims the stompbox has “a very pretty kind of distortion that releases overtones reminiscent of a Fender Rhodes or a Wurlitzer keyboard.”

The Germanium Woolly Mammoth features the same four knobs as the standard version: “Output,” “EQ,” “Pinch,” and “Wool.” The “EQ” knob refines your tone in the mix, from giving your mids a boost to emphasizing the lows. The “Pinch” knob changes the voice of the overtones and lets you dial in a sharper fuzz or broken overdrive sounds. And finally, the “Wool” control alters the amount of ‘hair’ or gristle in the fuzz.
