John Mayer has taken to the stage to perform his new single Last Train Home live for the first time. His appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! saw him bring out the new hot pink-finished PRS Silver Sky for the filmed live performance, which you can see below.

On stage, Mayer is joined by the same collaborators that joined him in the studio for Last Train Home, including Toto percussionist Lenny Castro and keys player Greg Phillinganes. The track is taken from his soon-to-be-released record Sob Rock, which he announced at the beginning of this month.

As you can hear with Last Train Home, the album pays nostalgic tribute to the soft rock sounds of the 1980s. Mayer explained to The Wall Street Journal where the sonic palette came from: “I asked myself, ‘What music makes me feel like everything’s going to be OK?’” he said. “And it’s the music I listened to growing up in the 80s. There’s a security-blanket aspect about that sound that reminds me of a safer time.”

For the Kimmel performance, Mayer also took on a slightly extended solo jam at the end, replacing the very 1980s fadeout on the recorded version. You can see the performance in the video below.

The album is set to be released in full on 16 July, and can be preorderd at sobrock.net.
